How to Style Floating Shelves in Every Room

Sharing is caring!

If you have floating shelves in your home but don’t know exactly how to style them, then you’ve come to the right place. In my opinion, floating shelves are one of the easiest ways to combine style and organization.

Floating shelves are also perfect for smaller spaces, as they take up zero floor space. What’s also great is that they look absolutely clean and fit in with any style.

And if you ever get tired of the decor or want to change things up, you can easily change your decor instead of changing everything. You can really put them in any room and style them individually.

Whether in the living room, bedroom, or even your home office, I’ll also give you some ideas and inspiration for every room! So let’s go.

How to Style Floating Shelves: Your Guide

Step 1: What’s Your Style?

Before you even start decorating, it’s best to define your style. This will make decorating much easier later on. All you really need to know is what the style of your home is.

  • Minimalist? -> then choose neutral colors, clean lines, and fewer decorative pieces.
  • Modern? -> then go for metallic accents and clear geometric shapes.
  • Boho vibe? -> go for natural materials, textures, and small plants.
  • Elegant? -> gold, silver, or black accents and high-quality pieces are your go-to.

But stick to a maximum of 2-3 materials and colors, otherwise it will look way too chaotic.

Step 2: How Many Floating Shelves?

The number of floating shelves you can hang depends on the size of your rooms. If you live in a small apartment, one or two floating shelves are often sufficient, perhaps three at most. Any more than that could make the wall look cluttered. After all, the goal is to maintain a feeling of openness rather than filling everything up.

Try to leave a gap of 30-45 cm between two floating shelves so that both have enough space to breathe. Also, try to hang them at eye level to make them the focal point.

A little tip: it’s best to use the upper shelf for heavier or more eye-catching decorative pieces and the lower shelf for lighter decorations.

I think the size of the floating shelves is just as important. If you choose small ones but your wall is huge, they will look completely lost, with or without decorations. And if they are too big for the wall, they will make the room feel cramped.

Oh, and another tip: especially in small apartments, a longer horizontal shelf is often the better choice, as it visually stretches the wall.

Step 3: Group Items in Odd Numbers

What I think is very important to mention is that not every inch of the floating shelf needs to be covered with decorations. The only thing that will happen then is that it will look totally cluttered and messy.

It’s better to decorate in odd numbers. For example, choose 3 or 5 pieces to use for decoration. It’s also important to vary the height of the pieces.

Therefore, start with the tallest piece, then add a slightly smaller piece, and finally use very small pieces. This will create a harmonious look.

That’s the rule you can use as a guide. However, you don’t have to stick to it strictly.

Step 4: Style Shelves in Clusters

The worst thing you can do is scatter all your decorative pieces randomly across your floating shelves. This just makes everything look messy.

This tip goes hand in hand with the previous one. It involves styling your floating shelves in clusters. This means that three pieces, for example, belong together visually. They basically form a unit.

It could look like this:

  • One anchor piece, such as a large vase, books, or another large object.
  • A secondary item, such as a decorative bowl.
  • An optional accent, such as a candle or a small sculpture.

Again, the idea is to mix the sizes of the objects to make your floating shelves look more interesting.

If you’re wondering how many clusters you need, here’s a little tip: if you have small floating shelves, one cluster is perfectly sufficient. But if you have longer shelves, two clusters are better. Just leave some space between them.

Step 5: Mix Materials

To ensure your floating shelves look truly high-end, it’s best to mix several materials and textures. You can do this by combining warm, cool, soft, and hard surfaces.

For example:

  • Wood as shelves or trays -> adds warmth
  • Ceramic/stone (e.g., a vase) -> is timeless and adds calm
  • Glass -> for lightness and a modern touch
  • Metal (black, brass, or chrome accents) -> for elegance

Texture is what adds depth. That’s why you should use matte ceramics instead of shiny plastic, linen, or fabric covers for books, and textured vases or bowls.

The thing is, if everything is too smooth, it looks boring. But if everything is very textured, it looks rather restless. So it’s important to find the right balance.

In general, try to use a maximum of 3-4 materials per shelf. If you have several shelves, repeat this pattern. This will make everything look cohesive.

Step 6: Decorating

Now we come to what is probably the most exciting part: decorating.

I always start by emptying the shelf completely. Then I gather all the pieces I have lying around. This gives me a good overview of the things I have available. You can then sort the decorative objects into large, medium, and small. This makes decorating even easier later on.

Since we already figured out the style in step 1, you can also sort out some pieces right away.

If you’re unsure what to use, don’t worry, I’ve listed a few things that you probably already have at home:

Plants

Who would have thought? But it really is the easiest way to add some freshness and life to your creation. Trailing plants are particularly interesting. But only as an accent, not as a jungle.

By the way, fake plants are just as good as real ones. Maybe even better, because you don’t have to take care of them.

Coffee Table Books

No, they’re not for reading. They’re just for *aesthetics*. Okay, maybe not just that, because they’re really good for decorating, too. They’re a good base.

For example, you can stack 2-3 books on top of each other. Preferably in nice neutral colors. That might be enough and would look good.

But you could also put an elegant candle holder or a candle on top. Both options look stylish.

Vases

The rule here is: imperfect is better than perfect. That’s exactly what looks expensive in the end. So think of imperfect shapes, matte surfaces, organic lines, and let the vase be the largest piece in your cluster.

Sculptures

Here, too, it’s character that counts, not quantity. Abstract shapes look more exciting and luxurious than standard ones. The material doesn’t matter; it could be metal, stone, or wood. What matters is that it suits your style and your arrangement.

Bowls & Trays

I don’t think bowls even need to have a practical use. If they have a unique shape, they are sufficient as decorative pieces. The same goes for mini trays. But of course, you could still use them to collect small items.

However, you would have to be careful that the small bowl or tray doesn’t become a complete storage space.

Frames & Art Prints

You could take two empty picture frames in different sizes and lean them against the wall. This looks really great, especially in simple colors such as black, off-white, or wood.

But you could also use a painting. And in a color similar to the wall, it would look really high-end.

Other nice options:

  • Photos: black and white photos look very elegant and calm, while also being personal.
  • Abstract art: this looks particularly nice in neutral or metallic frames and also adds texture and depth.
  • Colored paintings: you could use these to add accents. To prevent everything from looking too overwhelming, it’s best to keep the rest neutral.

Style Floating Shelves in the Bedroom

When it comes to floating shelf bedroom ideas, fewer shelves are usually enough. 1-2 should be enough. At the end of the day, the bedroom should be a place where you can relax and not feel overwhelmed.

What you could do here:

  • Use a small floating shelf next to the bed to replace the nightstand. This is especially smart if you have a small bedroom. You can then place your alarm clock on it and, depending on the size, even your cell phone and a small lamp.
  • You could also place a longer floating shelf above your bed and lean personal photos, a candle, and a sculpture on it, for example.

How to Style Floating Shelves in the Kitchen

In the kitchen, floating shelves are primarily there to create order. That’s why it makes the most sense to hang them above work surfaces or the coffee area.

You can then place the following on them:

  • Pretty glasses, cups, and plates (preferably matching)
  • Small jars with oils, spices in cute jars, or stylish syrup dispensers
  • Small plants, such as trailing plants for some freshness and color
  • Decorative objects such as small tins, bowls, or mini works of art
  • Cookbooks or cutting boards displayed vertically

Floating Shelf Ideas for the Bathroom

If you have a small bathroom, you probably don’t have much space for an extra cabinet. But floating shelves can help you out a bit. You could mount one above the sink or toilet, for example. Just make sure that they are waterproof or at least moisture-resistant.

Then you can put a basket or box on it with toilet paper inside, for example. I think that’s super practical.

Or folded or rolled towels would also be a nice idea. Then add candles, plates, and fragrance diffusers, and you’re done.

Living Room Floating Shelf Ideas

In the living room, you can mount floating shelves above sofas, consoles, or sideboards. They will also stand out there. It is best to hang them at eye level.

Then you can place decorative pieces on them, such as empty picture frames, a single piece of artwork, books, plants, candle holders, or sculptures. As already mentioned in the rules, stick to 3-5 objects per shelf so that it does not look overwhelming.

Floating Shelf Ideas for the Home Office

When working from home, it tends to be more functional, as this is where some clutter can accumulate. The spot above the desk is a good place for this. You can then place storage boxes, organizers, notebooks, or pen holders on it.

Then, as usual, add some decorative pieces such as candles, sculptures, or motivational prints.

Keep everything nice and tidy here too, because only then will you be able to focus properly.

To Wrap it Up

So, now you should know how to style floating shelves. The thing is, there is no right or wrong, but there are “rules” that can help if you don’t know where and how to start. Especially if you have a few decorative pieces in front of you, it can be a bit overwhelming. That’s why I advise you to just try it out. And then see what looks really good. Maybe the rule of 4 will work for you, haha.
