How to Start Your Day Right: Realistic Morning Routine Before Work

Sharing is caring!

We all know those people on social media who talk about the ‘perfect and most realistic morning routine’. And then they show you a 2+ hour session of reading, meditating, and a full-body workout. As if anyone has time for all of that!? I believe a morning routine has to be realistic to be sustainable and fit into your daily life. On weekends, we can all have a 5-hour routine if we want, but during the work week? Hell no. In this post, I’ll show you a realistic morning routine that will actually help you start your day right.

Why Your Brain Needs a “No-Brainer” Routine

how to start your day right

It actually makes sense that those 2-hour influencer morning routines fail you. It’s because of something called decision fatigue. Science shows that our willpower is kind of like a battery that empties with every choice we make.

Just think about it. During the week, you’re already stressed about work. Your brain is basically programmed to worry about the day ahead. And you really don’t want to have to decide every morning what to do first and what to do next. That’s the easiest way to waste your energy.

However, a realistic morning routine will put you on autopilot. You won’t stress about what to do, you just do. That will save you mental power for stuff that actually requires your energy.

A Realistic Morning Routine Before Work

Step 0: The Night Before (Prep is Everything)

Choosing what to wear at 6 AM is a total trap. It’s one of those tasks that sucks the life out of your brain before you’ve even had coffee. We all know it. Staring at a pile of clothes, having a mini-meltdown because ‘we have nothing to wear,’ while the clock is ticking.

It’s a massive waste of energy that you could be using for literally anything else. My fix is to prep it the night before. Throw your clothes on a chair or hang them up so they’re ready to go. When you wake up, you don’t even have to think, you just get dressed. This way, you won’t have any headache in the morning which honestly is the biggest win.

Step 1: The No-Phone Rule: How to Start Your Day Right Without the Digital Noise

Nowadays, it’s just so easy to grab your phone in the morning and scroll through social media. What I’ve found is that first of all, I’m in a bad mood when I do that, and second, I continue being on social media for the rest of the day. At least when I have the time and am not working. And truthfully, that sucks. How you spend your morning basically dictates the trajectory of your entire day.

The reason why it’s so bad is that your brain is pretty vulnerable in the morning. You’re transitioning from deep sleep to being awake. Scientists found out that during this time, your brain waves are in a state called Alpha and Theta. This is a chill and creative state. But if you grab your phone instantly, you’re skipping that state and jumping straight into the so-called Beta waves, which are basically a stress mode.

Essentially, you’re letting people’s drama into your head before you’ve even had the chance to breathe. It’s not about being a robot, but about being smart with your battery and knowing how to start your day right without wasting energy.

So, leave the phone alone for the first couple of hours so you’ll be in control of your own mood.

I even try to check my phone only during my lunch break. And I must admit that I feel so much better.

It might also be because I’ve deleted social media apps from my phone and only use them on my laptop. That has truly helped me avoid being on social media all day long, especially in the morning.

The Snooze Trap (Don’t even think about it)

how to start your day right

While we’re already talking about the phone, we have to talk about the snooze button. And I know those extra couple of minutes feel like a gift from heaven, but don’t get it twisted. Actually, they’re a trap. Scientists call this sleep inertia.

Basically, when you hit snooze and fall back asleep, your brain starts a brand-new sleep cycle. However, your alarm goes off after 9 minutes or so, which tears your brain out of that cycle before it even really starts.

And well, that’s what makes you feel even more tired and groggy than if you had just gotten up the first time.

Tip: Try putting your phone or alarm clock on the other side of the room. This way, you’re forced, actually, to get out of bed to turn it off. Or count to 3 in your head and then get up immediately. I find that always helps me a lot, because I don’t want to fool myself and still not be up after 3 seconds.

And trust me, getting up when the alarm goes off the first time makes you feel like you’ve already won that day. That’s just really how you start your day right.

Step 2: The Dental Wake-Up Call (Why First Things First)

This is a step you should never ever skip. I know most people are thinking, “Oh, but why would I brush my teeth first before having eaten anything?” I get that. Because logically, that makes so much sense.

But there’s a massive scientific reason why you should brush your teeth and tongue before you even think about eating breakfast. The thing is that while you’re sleeping, your mouth becomes a playground for bacteria. Since you produce less saliva at night, those bacteria multiply like crazy and create that “fuzzy” feeling on your teeth. I looked it up, and it’s called biofilm, if anyone cares.

Anyway, the worst part is that when you eat first, you’ll swallow that entire bacterial party. Then you feed them sugar, which they then turn into acid that attacks your teeth.

But the most important thing is to brush your tongue. Did you know that approximately 50% of the bacteria found in your mouth live on your tongue? That’s huge. And that’s exactly why you need to use a tongue scraper to clean your tongue and reset your taste buds.

Oh, and a pro tip for you: clean your tongue BEFORE you brush your teeth. It totally makes sense given that your tongue holds that much bacteria.

Also, your breakfast won’t taste weird at all!

Step 3: Breakfast Motivation to Start Your Day Right

how to start your day right

Well, now that your taste buds are ready to work properly again, it’s time for the best part of the morning routine: breakfast. I’ll be honest here, I’ll never be someone who just rushes out to grab a coffee and a snack from the bakery. The first reason is that I like to fuel my body and stay full for as long as possible. Plus, I always love having my breakfast to look forward to the moment I wake up, in fact, even before I go to bed.

Also, if you just grab a sugary pastry from the bakery, your blood sugar will spike and then drop again. That’s why you get hangry and tired before lunch even starts.

There’s even a scientific reason why having breakfast is a game-changer for your morning routine. When you have something to look forward to, your brain releases dopamine, which is the ‘reward’ chemical. It makes getting out of bed ten times easier because you’re not moving out of discipline, but because you actually want that reward.

What I find most important here is to take the time to enjoy your breakfast. Wake up just a little earlier and fully enjoy it. Take it slow, there’s no need to rush through your meal. To be honest, I find it so calming.

Pro tip: Prep your breakfast the night before so you just have to take it out of the fridge and enjoy it!

Step 4: The Skincare Glow-Up (The Final Polish)

how to start your day right

Now, we’re heading back to the bathroom for the final step: skincare. Forget those ridiculous 10-step rituals you see on TikTok because nobody has time for that during the week. I stick to a dead-simple 3-step move. I do a fast cleanse, focusing only on my oily T-zone (since my cheeks are super sensitive), then follow up with moisturizer and SPF.

Let’s talk about SPF for a second: it’s the absolute MVP of this routine. I wear it religiously, even when it’s freezing and grey outside in winter. It’s hands-down the best insurance against sun damage and getting wrinkles way too early, so please, do yourself a favor and don’t skip it.

Just like that breakfast break we talked about, these 5 to 10 minutes are your personal ‘me-time’ before the work madness starts. It’s what makes you feel fresh and actually ready to face people. (And yeah, if you’re doing a full face of makeup, you’ll need to add a few more minutes to the clock.) The best way to start your day right.

The Realistic Time Breakdown

You’re probably wondering: ‘Okay, but how long does this actually take?’ So let’s break it down.

  • No-Phone Transition: 5–10 Minutes (while waking up; we don’t really have to count this time because you’re already in bed anyway. It’s just passive time you’re using to let your brain catch up with your body instead of frying it with TikTok’s dopamine hits before you’ve even blinked.)
  • Dental Hygiene: 5 Minutes
  • Fueling up (Breakfast): 15–20 Minutes
  • Skincare & Glow-up: 10 Minutes

In total, we’re talking about 30 to 40 minutes of intentional time. That’s it. It’s enough to make you feel like a human again, but short enough that you don’t have to wake up at 4 AM.

To Wrap it Up

This probably was the most realistic morning routine you’ve ever seen, haha. It’s so simple, but that’s okay and absolutely enough. Not everyone has time to spend 2+ hours on a morning ritual. Obviously, if you’re an early bird and you love waking up even earlier, then you could also plan a workout or a meditation session, whatever feels right for you and fits your schedule. But to start your day right, keeping it simple is the way to go. This way, you won’t have to worry about anything, and the routine just sticks.
